Allie rolled over and cracked an eyelid to see if the shades were darkened enough yet to betray the sunset. Hardly a glow from behind them; must be time to rise. She sat up and stretched, absently scratching at her arm and glancing around the bedroom. She was more than a little surprised to find that she was alone in the bed. Mattie must already be awake and elsewhere.
She rubbed the backs of her arms as she kicked to untangle herself from the covers, got up and stumbled to the bathroom. Why was she so itchy? She entered the bathroom and flipped on the light. Her first instinct was to look into the mirror above the sink, but of course, there was nothing of her reflected there. One of the more minor and yet very irritating details of routine life for the undead â no reflection. Oh well, she never worried that much about her looks anyway. Make-up would be impossible. Guess sheâd be going au-natural from now on.
She rubbed the back of her hand across her irritated cheek and then reached for the faucet so she could splash some cold water on her face. Maybe she should just shower again. She was so itchy. Maybe she was allergic to the detergent on Mattieâs sheets. Could vampires even be allergic to stuff? If that awful rotten smell she kept catching whiff of was coming from her, then she could use another shower anyway.
She turned on the faucet in the sink and stuck her hand under the water. The backs of her hands looked dirty. What was with that? She hadnât even been outside. They were brown, flaked with dry patches and something mushy. It couldnât be from her stint in the bathroom last night, could it? Ew.
She tried to rub it off but the more she rubbed away, the more that seemed to be there. It smelled terrible. What the hell? She turned off the water and tried to blink the sleep out of her eyes, holding a hand up to better focus on in the vanity light. It wasnât actually dirt; it was her skin that was brown. It almost looked burned. Had the sun reached her through some unseen crack in the blinds as she slept? No. It didnât hurt, and upon closer inspection, it didnât look burned really. It looked likeâ¦Oh my God. It looked like a sore! It wasnât red though, not like a cut or scrape. It was yellowish green around the edges, but mostly brown and rotted likeâ¦
Allie shrieked and stumbled backwards out of the bathroom.
Like a corpse. It looked like the skin of a corpse. Rotting, decomposing, dead flesh. Oh my God, she was rotting! She craned her neck to look at the itchy patch on the back of her other arm and found more of the same. Her face! She had felt itchy on her face too! Her fingers shot up to gingerly explore her cheeks for irregularities. Yes, she had patches of it there too, and under her eyes.
